It was the toughest job I've ever worked on. We could only temporarily shut down one track at a time while freight and passenger trains continued running on the other four tracks. Roman was as flexible with the schedule as they had to be and they didn't complain. Everything was laid out, coordinated and connected so everything worked. Roman did a very nice job for us.

Intermodal Station

Improvements included a truss roof with skylights, a mezzanine spanning all five of the station’s tracks, three raised boarding platforms, a renovated passenger tunnel, new stairs and escalators, elevators, ventilation systems, lighting and signage, and a state-of-the-art sound system to help passengers with hearing aids listen to announcements. More than 1.3 million passengers use the train station each year. They also connect to Greyhound and other bus services, as well as taxis. The $22 million, 18-month long project offers a rebuilt concourse for passengers and freight to and from Chicago, Minneapolis and other cities.

Challenge

Perform the demolition and reconstruction of a train station without interrupting the daily train schedule.

Solution

Roman employees took railroad construction safety training, eRail, which enabled all workers to be aware of the safety hazards involved at an operating train station.
